Mt Vernon Cares began its 12th year of mentoring this school year with a warm welcome from MVISD Superintendent Craig Watson. He thanked the mentors for giving their time each week to make a difference in their mentee's life, and he reminded students of the blessings they have because someone is eager to help them succeed.

Mt Vernon Cares is a community-based mentoring program that connects caring, committed adults with students who could benefit from additional academic, personal, and career support. Our mentors meet weekly with their high school mentees during lunch to listen to their concerns, encourage their goals, share experiences, and help students identify opportunities for their future. Together with our Communities in Schools Coordinator, Ashley Trantham, our mentors provide students with consistent, positive adult guidance, support academic achievement and confidence, and help them develop life and career skills.

Mt Vernon Cares was formed in 2015 as a 501(c)(3)non-profit organization and has been going strong ever since the very first meeting. Our community members have successfully mentored over 500 students. Lifelong friendships have developed over the years because our community cares about our students' well-being.

In addition to mentoring, we provide monthly Brookshire’s gift cards so students can buy food and learn to eat healthy and budget wisely. We are grateful to everyone who has made financial contributions to support this program over the years so our students can receive these gift cards each month.
