Local residents and visitors are invited to begin their celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday by attending a special USA 250th Anniversary program planned at the Mount Vernon Rotary Club’s meeting at noon on Friday, July 3.
In honor of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the club’s weekly program will focus on our flag and how we honor it in the words of our pledge and in the music of our national anthem.
Air Force veteran Ridley Briggs will take us on a retrospective journey as we examine the meaning of the words in our Pledge of Allegiance. Often spoken without thought to the true meaning of the words spoken, Briggs’ presentation brings to focus the meaning of each phrase.
Mary Lou Largent with American Legion and American Legion Riders of Post 243 has pledged to be on hand to sing our National Anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner. The lyrics come from the “Defense of Fort M’Henry”, a poem written by Francis Scott Key. He was inspired to put the words to paper on September 14, 1814, after witnessing the attack on the American fort by the British navy during the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. The poem has four stanzas; however, only the first is traditionally sung.
The Club asks that those planning to attend please notify Secretary/Treasurer Nathan Reves via text message at 903-537-4908 by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 1. Include your name and the number of guests. There is no cost to view the program, which should get underway at about 12:20 p.m.
However, anyone who would like to enjoy the meal offered is asked to include that in their notification to Mr. Reves. The cost of the meal is $10 per person and is available starting at 12 noon. This week, the meal will include fried chicken, potato salad, beans, desserts, and other side dishes. Water and sweet or unsweetened tea are also provided.
