The City of Mount Vernon is excited to move forward with improvements to Little Creek Park as part of the Parks and Open Space Master Plan adopted by the City Council in June 2024. This long-range plan guides upgrades to existing parks and shapes future park development, informed by extensive community input. Having an approved master plan also allows the City to pursue grant funding to support park improvements.
In 2025, the City was awarded a matching grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to complete Phase I improvements at Little Creek Park. While funding for Phase II was not awarded in the 2026 grant cycle, the City has been encouraged to apply again in 2027.
Phase I improvements include:

  • New playground equipment
  • Conversion of the tennis court into pickleball courts
  • Resurface the basketball court
  • Creek enhancements
  • Additional shade
  • New signage
  • Site Furniture

The grant is $350,000, which will be matched by the City, EDC, and private contributions. MHS Planning and Design is currently working on design plans and will manage the bidding and construction process. Construction is expected to begin this fall.

Looking ahead, the City plans to apply for Phase II funding in July 2026. Proposed Phase II improvements include trail expansion, an amphitheater, spray ground expansion, additional parking, additional space for the farmers market, and a dog park.

Residents are encouraged to review the Parks & Open Space Master Plan to learn more about the vision for parks across Mount Vernon, including details from community surveys that helped shape the plan. These improvements reflect the City’s continued commitment to enhancing the quality of life and creating welcoming spaces for residents and visitors alike.
