The Franklin County Lions Club, part of the statewide network of Texas Lions, continues to make a visible impact in Mt. Vernon through hands‑on service, youth engagement, and community outreach. As one of the newest civic groups in the region, the club reflects the broader mission of Texas Lions: strengthening communities through volunteerism, humanitarian aid, and practical support for families.
Locally, the Lions focus on essential needs including vision care, health screenings, hunger relief, cancer support, diabetes awareness, and environmental projects. Their presence is well known at parades and festivals, thanks in part to the beloved Lions train, a longtime symbol of the club’s commitment to children and families. The Lions conducted vision screening for over 500 children at MVISD in September.
This year, the club donated a handcrafted Lions bench to the Silent Auction sponsored by the Franklin Co Art Alliance, designed in the spirit of the train and built to serve both adults and children. The bench supports up to 250 pounds and can be turned on its side to become a small chair for young children. Mr. Bill Heisel designed and built it, and Cynthia Weidman painted it, blending craftsmanship with creativity to create a piece that celebrates local service and pride.
As Texas Lions across the state continue their work in disaster relief, youth programs, and health initiatives, the Franklin County Lions Club stands as a strong example of how local volunteers bring statewide values to life—one project, one family, and one act of service at a time. you are interested in learning more about the Lions Club or becoming a member, please contact Lion Cynthia Weidman at sissytdy02@hotmail.com.
