History came to life for a group of local students last month as the Franklin County Historical Association welcomed them for an educational field trip through several of Mount Vernon’s historic properties. Students explored the 1894 Cotton Belt Railroad Depot, discovered fascinating exhibits at the Fire Station Museum, and watched a live blacksmithing demonstration led by Joel Dihlel. The tour also included a visit to the historic Thruston House, once home to Henry Clay Thruston, who is remembered as the tallest soldier to serve in the Confederate Army. The day concluded with pizza and an opportunity for students to enjoy the grounds surrounding the Lowry Pavilion.

The field trip offered students a unique opportunity to experience local history firsthand, thanks to the dedication of the Historical Association’s volunteers, who continue to preserve and share Franklin County’s heritage with future generations. The association welcomes schools and community groups interested in scheduling similar educational experiences. Watch the video below for a glimpse of the students’ adventure, and visit fchatx.com to learn more about the association’s historic properties and programs.
