For more than twenty years, Kim Basinger has supported survivors of sexual violence with care that is compassionate, timely, and trauma-informed. Because of her dedication, leadership, and advocacy, she was honored with the Vivian Miles Lifetime Achievement Award.
This award goes to professionals who have shown a long-term commitment to ending sexual violence and helping survivors. Given by the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, it celebrates at least ten years of meaningful service.
Basinger’s career is a clear example of this mission in action.
As a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner coordinator, Basinger helped more people get access to high-quality forensic nursing services. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, or SANEs, are specially trained to give trauma-informed medical care and collect forensic evidence.
Basinger has trained and mentored nurses starting out in SANE work, which has made the forensic nursing field stronger and helped more survivors get the care they need. Her leadership keeps SANE staffing steady so survivors can always get important forensic exams.
Her impact goes beyond caring for patients. Basinger secured funding for forensic camera equipment in the emergency department, improving how evidence is collected and documented. This improved care for survivors and made investigations more reliable. Her expertise is recognized in courtrooms nationwide; she is often called to testify as an expert witness in sexual assault trials. Through her credible testimony, she clarifies forensic findings and supports accountability.
A lot of Basinger’s work happens behind the scenes, but it makes a big difference. Every nurse she trains, every shift she covers, and every improvement she makes helps survivors get better care. Throughout her extraordinary career, she has stood for dignity, compassion, and justice, and has worked to improve the systems that support survivors.
The Vivian Miles Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes not just years of service, but the lasting impact of someone who has spent years advocating, teaching, mentoring, and making change. For more than twenty years, Basinger has shown this kind of impact.
Her work has led to stronger forensic nursing, better-trained healthcare professionals, and more compassionate care for survivors. Because of her steady commitment and outstanding work, Kim Basinger truly deserves the Vivian Miles Lifetime Achievement Award.
