In Mount Vernon, stories of creativity and determination are part of what makes the community so special. Fourteen-year-old Katherine Eng, the young entrepreneur behind Kat’s Crochetions, embodies both qualities as she transforms a childhood hobby into a meaningful venture that supports her future educational goals. As a student at Mount Vernon Middle School, Katherine is already demonstrating how passion and perseverance can lead to something truly impactful.
Katherine’s journey into crocheting began when she was just seven years old. Inspired by her step-grandmother, she became fascinated after watching her carefully stitch yarn into beautiful creations. Curious, Katherine asked what she was doing and soon began learning the craft herself. Like many beginners, she initially found the process frustrating. She recalls even throwing a project in frustration, prompting her step-grandmother to gently remind her, “You can’t crochet when you’re mad, otherwise the stitches become too tight.” At the time, Katherine didn’t fully understand this advice, but with experience, she has come to appreciate the patience and calm the craft requires.

Although she stepped away from crocheting for several years, Katherine rediscovered her passion early last year. Without the distractions of a phone and while considering productive ways to spend her time, she began reflecting on her future, particularly the rising cost of college. A lesson in her sixth-grade math class about college expenses and long-term debt left a lasting impression. Motivated to take proactive steps toward her education, Katherine asked her parents if she could try making and selling crocheted items, starting with small bears. As she learned to read crochet patterns and gained confidence in her skills, the process became faster and more enjoyable, transforming a simple idea into a purposeful endeavor.
Katherine’s entrepreneurial journey quickly gained momentum. Her first vendor experience at Country Fest was an overwhelming success, with her products selling out within the first two hours. While this early achievement was encouraging, subsequent events taught her valuable lessons about the realities of running a small business. She realized the importance of offering items at a range of price points to ensure affordability for customers and learned that sales can vary depending on timing and season. These experiences helped her develop resilience and a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship.
Among her favorite creations are crocheted bunnies, which hold special significance as some of the first items she mastered. Katherine finds inspiration in high-quality patterns, particularly those that provide clear instructions and detailed images. Each new design presents an opportunity to refine her skills and explore her creativity, fueling her enthusiasm for the craft.

The Mount Vernon community has played a vital role in supporting Katherine’s efforts. Encouraged by school administrators, she initially explored selling her creations for a Valentine’s Day event, which ultimately led her to participate in local vendor markets. At these events, familiar faces, friends of her family and community members who have watched her grow up, have enthusiastically supported her business. Having spent much of her childhood accompanying her mother to various workplaces around town, Katherine has built meaningful connections that continue to encourage her entrepreneurial journey. These relationships have fostered a sense of belonging and affirmation, reinforcing the strong community spirit that defines Mount Vernon.
Looking ahead, Katherine hopes to continue growing Kat’s Crochetions while focusing on her education. She is considering attending either Baylor University or Texas A&M University and plans to take advantage of dual credit opportunities to earn college credits while still in high school. Regardless of where her academic path leads, she intends to keep crocheting to support her schooling and maintain the creative outlet that has become such an important part of her life.
Community members can find Katherine and her creations at local events such as Country Fest and Spring Fest, with plans to expand to farmers' markets and potentially launch an online Etsy shop. She is also exploring opportunities to feature her products in local retail spaces, making her handcrafted items even more accessible. Whether at vendor events or simply around town, Katherine’s work continues to bring smiles to those who encounter it.
Katherine Eng’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and community support. Through Kat’s Crochetions, she is not only crafting charming handmade items but also weaving together a future built on determination and hope. Her journey serves as an inspiration to others, reminding us that even the smallest stitches can create something truly meaningful.
