Some dogs are looking for a home. Barley is looking for a purpose.
Barley, a Red Heeler mix, arrived at the shelter as an owner surrender in June of last year. Since then, she has been adopted and returned three different times. Shelter staff is quick to point out that none of those returns were because of anything Barley did wrong.
In many ways, Barley is exactly what she was bred to be: a hardworking ranch dog with plenty of energy, intelligence, and personality. The challenge is finding a home that matches her instincts. Staff believes Barley would thrive on a farm or ranch where she has room to roam, a job to do, and people who understand her working-dog nature.
Despite her tough ranch-dog spirit, Barley has become a favorite among volunteers and staff. She’s affectionately known around the shelter as “Barky Barley” because she always has something to say. One volunteer shared that she and Barley have a conversation every morning during feeding time.
“I talk to her, and she talks right back,” she said. “She has the cutest personality.”
Barley gets along well with other dogs and enjoys having canine companions. However, she prefers older dogs and does not do well with puppies. She is also remarkably well-mannered, has never had accidents in her kennel, and already knows several basic commands.
Those who know Barley best believe her perfect match is still out there. After three unsuccessful adoptions, they remain hopeful that the next family who gives her a chance will be the one that finally gives her what she’s been missing all along: a forever home with room to run, a purpose to fulfill, and people to love.
Barley has been waiting more than a year for that opportunity. Maybe the fourth time will be the charm.
