A Night of Spotlight and Service: Chamber Celebrates Franklin County’s 2025 Honorees

Under the “Old Hollywood – Mount Vernon style” theme, the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce gathered to celebrate the people, businesses, and organizations that keep our community moving forward. Following updates on major local investments and initiatives, including MVNow’s nonprofit digital news launch, guests returned from intermission to honor this year’s award winners. From lifelong public service and first-responder leadership to small-business growth, agricultural excellence, and nonprofit impact, the evening spotlighted service with heart. These honorees represent the best of Franklin County: commitment, compassion, and community pride.

Stephanie Herrera – Chamber Champion
Stephanie Herrera is a devoted community servant known for her consistent presence and unwavering support of local events, businesses, and veterans. Serving for over 25 years with American Legion Post 243 and on the Chamber Board, she leads with humility and heart. Even in the face of personal loss, she continues to show up for others. Stephanie embodies the true spirit of a Chamber Champion.

Kassidy Wesson – Ambassador of the Year
Kassidy Wesson plays a vital role in shaping downtown Mount Vernon through her work as Main Street Manager and Historic Preservation Officer. A steady presence at community events, she works behind the scenes to support local businesses and initiatives. Her servant leadership and attention to detail have made a lasting impact. Kassidy is a cornerstone of community connection.

Proverbs Kitchen – Small Business of the Year
Proverbs Kitchen, founded by Courtney Bean, is more than a bakery—it’s a story of redemption, faith, and community. What began as a childhood passion has grown into a mission-driven business centered on bringing people together. Through every loaf and gathering, Courtney shares a message of hope and belonging. Proverbs Kitchen is feeding both bodies and community spirit.

Alliance Bank – Large Business of the Year
Alliance Bank combines big-bank capabilities with a strong commitment to local community values. With nearly 20 local employees, the Franklin County team actively supports schools, nonprofits, and small businesses. Under regional leadership, they continue to invest in the area's growth and success. Alliance Bank stands as a trusted partner in the community’s future.

American Legion Post 243 – Non-Profit of the Year
American Legion Post 243 has become a powerful force for good in Franklin County, donating significantly to local organizations and families in need. Beyond financial support, they host community events, honor veterans, and serve year-round. Their impact reaches far beyond their walls. Their mission reflects a deep and lasting commitment to service.

Warrior Spirit Project – Non-Profit of the Year
Founded by David and Charla Truesdale, Warrior Spirit Project supports veterans and first responders through programs focused on healing and resilience. Since relocating to Mount Vernon, they’ve expanded their services and revived meaningful traditions, such as the Honor Flag Program. Their work fosters connection, restoration, and community. They serve those who have served with compassion and purpose.

Pleasant Hill Dairy – Agriculturist of the Year
Pleasant Hill Dairy, a family-run operation since 1986, continues to lead in agricultural excellence in Franklin County. Known for high-quality production and innovation, the Plantinga family has expanded into raw milk offerings. Their commitment to community, faith, and agriculture remains strong. They represent the enduring strength of local farming.

Kathy Johnson – Woman of the Year
Kathy Johnson has dedicated over 37 years to public service in Mount Vernon and Franklin County. Through numerous leadership roles, she has helped guide civic operations, economic development, and community initiatives. Her professionalism and integrity have left a lasting mark. Kathy’s career reflects a lifetime of service and leadership.

Max Canaday – Man of the Year
Max Canaday has spent decades serving and protecting Franklin County through law enforcement and emergency management. With a career spanning nearly 40 years, he continues to lead in critical community roles. His commitment to service is rooted in a lifelong dedication to others. Max exemplifies what it means to serve with purpose.

David Maxton has shaped generations of students through his 30-year career in agricultural education at Mount Vernon ISD. Tom Sample brings a lifetime of leadership from the technology and retail industries into his continued service in Franklin County. Since making Mount Vernon home, he has invested in local organizations, mentorship, and community life. His quiet dedication and willingness to serve stand out. Tom’s legacy is one of steady, faithful contribution.

Susan Sample – Hall of Fame Honoree
Susan Sample has devoted her life to education and supporting children and families in need. From her years as an educator to her work with Communities In Schools, she has made a meaningful difference locally. Her initiatives, like Lunches of Love, continue to impact lives each year. Susan’s compassion and service define her legacy.
