Rodney Caudle our code officer has been review the code of ordinances, meeting with public safety staff, familiarizing himself with the city, and touring some of the reported properties. Rodney will become active next week contacting property owners regarding issues and providing solutions to help them become compliant with the city codes.
Rodney also participated in the July 9, Historic Landmark Commission meeting. The Commission reviewed a certificate of appropriateness application for 208 Miller Street. The application was approved with some provisions. Once completed the project will turn an eyesore into a nice house and improve the neighborhood.
Rodney is also a certified Fire Marshal. He will be helping our businesses to become and remain compliant with all relevant fire codes.
Code Enforcement and Building Inspection – Code enforcement is often interpreted to include construction inspection; there are two separate roles and responsibilities.
Code enforcement in Texas enforces local city ordinances and state laws regarding public health, safety, and property maintenance. Officers investigate issues like tall grass, trash accumulation, junk vehicles, and substandard building conditions. Their primary goal is voluntary compliance through education, though they can issue citations or testify in municipal court.

Department heads are completing their budget drafts. They will be meeting with Andrew and me starting next week. We will begin workshops with council the 3rd week in July.
Thanks go out to the Franklin County Judge and Commissioners Court for working with the city to help us purchase a new fire engine. The Engine arrived in Mount Vernon one on July 2. A picture is attached.
