The staff at the Franklin County Library keep things lively for our youth and their parents each summer. The 2026 Summer Programming schedule is no different.

Last Friday was Bubble Day, which was relocated indoors due to the weather. Brett Roberts brought his amazing BUBBLE SHOW, and then attendees blew their own bubbles. The talented musicians with Mount Vernon Music brought to life the story of Ferdinand the Bull and the Three Little Pigs with live music earlier in the week.

There is much more to come, including a Petting Zoo for kids, from 10 a.m. to noon on the square on Friday, June 12. Rabbits, ducks, baby goats, horses, and other domesticated animals are brought by experienced handlers to share with the young. There is nothing like a squeal of delight or laughter from youth as they enjoy meeting some of our feathered or furry friends.

The Summer Reading program for youth ages four to 10 years is Monday through Friday, June 22-26. Registration began in May, but some seats are still available in one of two time slots: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon. Unearth a story: Digging into America's past. We can't wait for you to join us for books, crafts, and fun! See registration form here.

Build your own Ice Cream Day treat, then enjoy it starting at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10. Choose your favorite flavor, mix it with a variety of toppings to enjoy.

Get the whole family involved on Family Lego Day, Tuesday and Wednesday, July 14 and 15, at the Library building at 100 Main Street, downtown Mount Vernon. It is a two-day event. Come on one or both days during library hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Dino Adventures are planned for Friday, July 24, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church Gym. The ultimate dino dream team will lead the kids to stomp, chomp, roar, and smile their way through the community celebration of Dino Day.

These summer events are brought to the community by the Franklin County Friends of the Library and the St. Clair Endowment Fund. Adults and older youth will enjoy the displays, community projects, and decorations surrounding the celebration of America’s 250th Birthday in a special traveling exhibit at the library this summer.

Do not forget the regular activities, Story Time at 10 a.m. for youth on the second Tuesday, June 9. The Kid Crochet each Friday at 2 p.m. for ages 10 and up.

Ongoing adult activities for the summer include: the Creative Hands workshops, each Thursday at 10 a.m.; the Circle of Friends Book Club at 1 p.m. on the first and third Friday of the month for adults with disabilities; Movies with Friends at 1:30 p.m. on the last Friday of the month; and the Plot Twist Book Club at 6 p.m. on the last Tuesday of the month.

These events are also listed individually on the calendar section of our site.
