For Anna Kern, the path to launching FM 900 Farm Box didn’t begin with a business plan, it began with family, hardship, and a quiet piece of land in Northeast Texas.
Though she describes it as “just under 30 years,” Kern’s connection to the area stretches back to around 2000, when her family purchased property during a difficult season. At the time, her brother had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and the land became a place of refuge, a way for the family to reconnect, slow down, and simply spend time together away from city life in Dallas. What started as a retreat gradually became something more, as the years brought repeated visits and a growing sense that this place held deeper meaning.

Over time, Kern began to notice what she describes as a kind of “magnetic pull” to the land. It wasn’t just the area's beauty, but a connection that kept drawing her and her family back. That feeling became even more significant a few years ago, when her mother, researching their family history, discovered that Kern’s great-great-grandmother had been born in nearby Purley, and that other relatives were buried in Mount Vernon. What once felt like a coincidence began to look more like a return home.

That sense of belonging would eventually shape the direction of her future. Around 2019, as many people were reevaluating their lives and priorities, Kern and her husband began asking themselves whether the life they had built in Dallas was truly fulfilling. Both coming from backgrounds in the art world, they began exploring how to create something that combined their passions with a more meaningful way of living. For Kern, that meant bringing together her love for cooking, gardening, and supporting local farmers.
Spending time in Northeast Texas, she had come to realize that the region was home to an abundance of farms producing high-quality, sustainably grown food. Yet despite that, many people either didn’t know about these farms or found it difficult to access their products, often requiring multiple trips across the area. That gap sparked an idea: what if there were a way to connect people directly to these farms, making it simple and convenient?

FM 900 Farm Box was born out of that idea, but its mission extends beyond convenience. For Kern, it’s about restoring a sense of connection in a world that often feels increasingly disconnected. In an age of food delivery apps and instant services, she believes people have become removed from the sources of what they consume. Her goal is to change that by helping families not only access better food, but also understand where it comes from and who is behind it.
That philosophy is reflected in how the business operates. FM 900 Farm Box partners exclusively with local farms, most located within 30 to 40 miles of Mount Vernon, with some just minutes away. Kern and her husband are intentional about who they work with, selecting farms that prioritize sustainable, regenerative practices and treat both the land and their animals with care. Each week, the process remains hands-on. After orders are placed, the couple personally travels to each farm to pick up the products, carefully storing them before assembling the boxes for delivery. The final step is handled through a courier service that provides temperature-controlled, trackable delivery, ensuring the food arrives fresh and handled with the same level of care it was produced with.

Despite being a small, two-person operation, the early response has been encouraging, with dozens of boxes delivered in the first weeks and strong customer feedback, with customers appreciating both the quality and the concept. Still, for Kern, success isn’t defined by numbers alone. Her vision is rooted in something deeper: building relationships, supporting local farmers, and creating a stronger sense of community.
At its heart, FM 900 Farm Box reflects a simple but powerful idea: that food can be more than a transaction. It can be a connection point between people, places, and purpose. And for Anna Kern, that connection has come full circle, leading her back to the very place that first brought her family together all those years ago.
